Smallville is about to get magical. The DC Comics digital series based on the long-running TV show takes a supernatural sidetrack in a new storyline featuring Zatanna and John Constantine.
The magically powered Zatanna, best known for casting spells spoken backwards, returns to the world of Clark Kent and Co. in "Harbinger," a story beginning Friday that runs parallel to the comic's main narrative. Introduced in Season 8 of the TV show (played by Serinda Swan), Zatanna is now in London. "She's taken her show on the road, using her tour as a cover to run down and deal with all the messes/enchanted/cursed everythings her father left behind when he died," says Bryan Q. Miller, who writes the comic book extension of the TV series. "By the time we catch up with her in 'Harbinger,' she's closing in on the final item on that list."
Enter Constantine, the crass, chain-smoking British occult detective, who has a long, complicated history with Zatanna. "He and Zee butt heads over how to deal with her father's final cursed object," Miller teases of the popular DC character's first appearance in the Smallville universe. "It was stolen from Constantine and he wants it back... so he can sell it to the highest bidder."
New chapters of Smallville digital comics are available Fridays at readdcentertainment.com and via the DC Comics app, the iBookstore, Nook Store and Kindle Store. Printed collections are released monthly.

For fun I thought I would share the costumes for a few of the characters. Most were already established in the series. Bryan wanted to very much keep the vibe of teenagers and not do full blown super suits, as they are still learning the ropes.

When The Vampire Diaries bi-weekly digital series launches on Halloween, fans of the show will learn untold secrets about the origins and histories of the show's characters and concepts.
Based on the CW show of the same name, The Vampire Diaries is following in the footsteps of hit comics like Smallvilleand Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But in this case, the comic is being released while the TV show is still on the air.
So although the comic can't tough the future of the Diariesuniverse, the comic will be tapping into the series' still-unknown past. With characters that have lived as long as 1000 years,The Vampire Diaries still has a lot of unexplored territory, despite its frequent flashbacks to key settings from history.

I deeply regret that I will be unable to attend the Las Vegas Comic Expo this weekend. Unfortunately my knee injury is preventing me from traveling at this time. I am on couch rest with tons of ice. Again, I am sorry for the cancellation but it cannot be helped. I hope Charles, all the guests and fans have a wonderful weekend in Vegas and I look forward to seeing all of you next year.

Smallville Season 11 is coming to and close, but that won't be the end of Clark Kent & Co.'s adventures. Starting this fall the popular digital comic book series based on the long-running TV series will segue into a new format. Rather than continuing under the Season 11 banner — which kicked off last year — the DC Comics franchise will now consist of individual miniseries, each one starting with a new No. 1 issue.
The change won't affect the tone or continuity established in Season 11 by writer Bryan Q. Miller. Instead the format tweak is a bid to "get the casual or first-time reader a little more up to speed in each of those No. 1 issues," says Miller, who wrote for the TV show and is on the writing staff of Syfy's Defiance. "Not that we don't already do that to an extent, but [now] the first 20-30 pages of each arc will be more about setting up the status quo for the miniseries, rather than jumping right into things. It's a way to help welcome more people into the Smallville universe that we've been expanding on since the television series ended."

Over the past year, writer Bryan Q. Miller and a rotating team of artists have been slowly building the universe of "Smallville" into its own, far-reaching superhero continuity in the "Smallville Season 11" digital-first comics series.
In August, that reach will extend a little bit further. "Smallville Season 11" #16 will introduce one of the DC Universe's top-tier characters into the mix, and while she may not necessarily play the role she does in the New 52, she's sure to shake things up. I asked Miller what's in store, and just who this character, a princess from an island, if you were wondering, is.

Did I mention that I was drawing a Lois Lane story? No? Well I'M DRAWING A LOIS LANE STORY! Bonus item..LANA LANG IS ALSO IN IT! Yeah...still pinching myself. Bryan Q Miller has penned a fantastic parallel arc to Smallville Season 11: Argo entitled Valkyrie. I am on pencil and ink duties while Carrie Strachen is on colors! I cannot wait for you guys to get into this story line. Good times ahead kids!! Read more about it from TV Guide's story below!
She's back! Four years after last appearing on TV, Lana Lang returns to Smallville — in comic-book form. Clark Kent's first love shows up in a new arc of DC Comics digital series Smallville Season 11 on Friday, April 5. The character — Clark Kent's first true love — last appeared in 2009, during the eighth season of the TV series. Shortly after gaining super powers (courtesy a special suit developed by Lex Luthor) she saved Metropolis by absorbing a kryptonite bomb, which essentially made her toxic to Clark. She then flew off into the proverbial sunset and out of his life. (The role was played byKristin Kreuk, now starring in The CW's Beauty and the Beast.)
"Since then Clark has not only gotten over Lana, but he has moved on with his life. He got engaged to Lois Lane and became Superman," says Season 11 writer Bryan Q. Miller (also a veteran of the TV show's writing staff). "A lot has happened in Lana's absence."

Hey Kids! Here is a step by step process for Smallville Season 11 Cover #12. This was done on Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper and rendered with Copic Markers.
Below I have a collection of images I took as I was working on this piece. Starting at the top moving from left to right then down-
Row 1) Pencils. Always have a good sketch. Nice and clean. First image is an unused concept. Second is the final concept for the cover. I normally take my sketches and scan them first. Then print them out as a blue line on the drawing paper I will be doing the rendering on.
Row 2) First I start with the skin. (Once day I will do a step by step on that, I promise.) Second I used a handful of Warm grays for the hair. Next the blacks. i use straight up black for these. Good thing to remember that not all darks are black. Only the core. Next I blend them out with Neutral 10.
Row 3) Continue the blending from dark to light with Neutral 8,6, then 5. You can keep going lighter if needed but for this area it is a dark portion of the suit. Next start the second section of the suit, which is much lighter. I started this section with Cool gray 7 as my darkest tone.
Row 4) like the Neutral colors, continue blending out from dark to light. I used Cool Gray 6, 5, 4, and very little 3 at the lightest points. Next i started the cracked ground. First I, again, started with the blacks.
Row 5) Next working in the center bolt I worked my way from Warm Gray 8 down to Warm Gray 5 as I rendered the lava like concrete. Next I moved to Clark's shadow. Starting with Tonal Gray 4 directly under his body. Next I switched to a very full Tonal Gray 3 and rendered the ground. I didn't worry about overlap as I was wanting the random textures to come thru.
Row 6) I next moved on to fill in the background moving back to dark with the Tonal Grays and finally black. I also used the airbrush as well as a tooth brush to splatter the ground and add another layer of texture to the stone. I then took white acrylic and, again, using the toothbrush splattered the ground giving random highlights to the stone. Finally I took both, white water color and a white gel pen and added the final white highlights to both Clark and the ground below.
Row 7) Final stage is to zap this into Photoshop and slap on some colors and special effects.
Breaking up between the warm, tonal, neutral, and cool grays can give an extra sense of depth to your illustration. Remembering the basic rule of warmer tones advancing and cooler tones receding can really work to your advantage. I also find that in this style of computer coloring it helps to keep the cool grays with the cool colors (blues) and the warmer grays with the warm colors (reds).
